Things I found out today...

So...here's what I learned at my Conference today:

1.  Those 4 questions I always give you on the handouts?  You need to do a better job of answering them.  They are 100% on point with the Regents.

2.  Reliability is staying on your exam.  There will be no changes made to your test.  Apparently, it has already been written (which is very different form Global last year.)

3.  The SEQs do NOT get intros or conclusions.  3 BODY paragraphs are required.

4.  What you need to do for the reliability question was clarified.  It isn't great, but it isn't a disaster either.

5.  The US exam is meant to be more challenging than the Global exam because you are a year older, a year closer to gradation, and a l a grade level above last year.

6.  We'll have a better ides of what you need in your essay & SEQs to pass those parts in December/January when they release he scoring rubric.

7.  CONTENT IS THE KEY TO THIS EXAM.  Skills are 2nd.  If you don't know your content, you cannot pass his exam.  The skills require you to know content.

8.  You have to make connections between content based on themes & content...and the themes are always involving he Constitution or Govt (Civics.)

See you tomorrow...

Make-ups Thursday, not tomorrow

Remember, I'm at a conference about your Regents tomorrow so make-ups are pushed from tomorrow to Thursday, same place & times.  Tomorrow's HWQ will also be Thursday.  Your test remains Friday.

See you Thursday!

Unbelievable...(in a funny way!!!)

You guys amaze me and I mean that very seriously, no sarcasm at all!

I got your pre-test results back today.  Most of you scored 8-12 correct out of 25.  On stuff you haven't learned.  In the time you took to do it.

You are the luckiest bunch of guessers I have ever known!!!

See you tomorrow...

No Make-Ups or Extra Help Monday, 10/21

Please note that I have adjusted your m/u days if you were legally out for the CH 1-4 Exam.

While I hope to be back tomorrow, I'm still not doing well so it will be a last minute decision in the morning.  As a result, there will be no make-ups or extra help tomorrow morning in case I'm still out.

Plan for Tuesday.  The worst thing that happens is I'm there & you are delayed by a day, the best thing is you didn't waste your time getting there & I'm not in.  Wednesday is the final deadline.

Hope to see you tomorrow.

TEST 11/1: Ch 5 Exam & Video Packet

Your Chapter 5 Exam will be on Friday, 11/1.  The Quizlet Review has been open since 10/11.  If you have been in class, paid attention, done your homework, and study you should do very well on the test.  STUDY THE REVIEW IN QUIZLET - it was made using the material on your exam.  Remember, all previous chapters are fair game to show up on your exam so be sure to review those topics in Quizlet, too!

Your Chapter 5 Video packets are due at the start of class on this day as well.

Make up for legal absences is before school (per my make-up policy), last day to make up is Wednesday, 11/6 .  Failure to make-up the exam will result in a zero for that test.  Cuts & illegal absences cannot be made up, and anyone late to class will not receive extra time on the exam.  Make-up period ends at 7:15 AM.  To have the same amount of time for the test as was offered in lass, you must arrive to 1823 by 6:45 AM.  You can arrive after that time, but your time ends at 7:15 AM.

If you can't come before school to make up the exam don't be absent for it!

QUIZ 10/28: Ch 5 Vocab Quiz

Vocabulary Quiz on these on Monday, 10/28.  Your words will be due at that time.  You may write them out as a list on paper OR you may write each on a flash card (use a flashcard for the required homework heading.)   Required homework heading must be used.  Use your knowledge, notes, online textbook, handouts, or the Internet to find the definitions.

Homework Heading (required on all work submitted):

Your Name                                                   US History
Class Period                                                Assignment
(in this case, your assignment is Ch 5 Vocab)

If you are making flashcards they MUST be rubber-banded together BEFORE submitting AND BEFORE the bell rings (there are rubber bands behind my desk - ask me!), and your top card must be a heading card (see above.)  You will get extra credit for making flash cards.

Make up for legal absences is before school (per my make-up policy), last day to make up is Wednesday, 10/30.

Copy & paste the link below for the Vocab list.  Yes, it is Chapter 5:

Remember - all previous vocab words are fair game & will also show up n this quiz!

10/18 Updates...

Let's try this again...

Next week I hope to be well enough to be off most of the meds & get back to our regular routine.  Thanks for doing your work while I've been home.  Believe me, as the teacher, it is way harder & more work to stay home than it is to come to school.

So, here are some updates:

1.  Your make-up dates for last Fridays exam, if you were legally absent, are now Tues & Wed, 10/22 & 10/23.  Same times & place as the original post states.

2.  Review your Chapter 5 notes from the beginning to where you ended last week.  You will be having quick, mini quizzes on them next week.  No notes allowed.

3.  That personal hotspot info was total news to me & most of the other adults I spoke with.  If you missed it, apparently you can "rent" (I assume for free) a personal hotspot to use at home for up to 2 weeks from the Brentwood Public Library with your Public Library card.  If you have issues with internet service at home, you may want to look into this service.

4.  Sub work from yesterday has been graded but not yet entered into Thinkwave.

5.  If you left your signed TW sheet for me on Tuesday with the sub, I got it Wednesday & entered it in TW that day.

6.  Report card grades will be entered in less than 3 weeks.  Keep on top of your work, what's due, check the blog daily, etc.

Have a great weekend & see you Monday, ready to move ahead!

Sub Work Graded

The sub work from Tuesday has been graded & entered in Thinkwave.

If you were legally absent, please follow the directions/notes posted with the assignment by the deadline.

Signed Thinkwave Sheets due Tomorrow, 10/17

Your signed Thinkwave sheets are due at the start of your class tomorrow.  If you are late, so is your sheet & it will be graded accordingly.

I did get 4 or 5 sheets with the sub work from 4th period, those have been recorded in Thinkwave.

Thursday, October 10, 2019

Reminder...

Remember your Chapters 2, 3, & 4 Video Packets are all due at the start of class tomorrow.  FInal warning: Credit will not be given to any packet that has incomplete work.

You will not be reminded about this in the future.

Sub Work from Friday, 10/4

After speaking with each of you today, the following is clear:

Period 3:
Only got 1 of the 4 sheets due to sub error.

Period 4:
No issues with any of the 4 sheets.

Period 5:
No issues with the 4 sheets, but many of you had issues arriving to class because of the hallway shenanigans.  You guess of 15-20 minutes late from the chaos seems to be accurate from what I found after your class today.

While my instructions were super clear, it isn't your fault, Per 3, that you were not given the full assignment.  The sub has admitted this.  And Per 5, based on the stories & confirmations I heard I understand that many of you had very limited time to complete the assignments through no fault of your own.

For this reason, I am not going to issue grades for Friday's sub work.  There is no fair way to give Per 3 a grade for work they did not get, and n fair way to give some of Per 5 a grade when they couldn't get to class.

That said, please remember what we discussed today.  There should be no phones out, no earbuds in, no changing seats, silent & independent work only.  You should be to class on time (which includes f you are allowed that extra minute or two that I give you...but the sub doesn't have to do that...so if they don't, go to late hall & get a pass, no arguing.)  All work is always collected, so be sure to turn in your completed work at the end of the period.

RAK Wall Reminders

Just a reminder that the "RAK Wall" is open for business any day I'm in school.  See the original post for details.  You can take an index card before the stat of class & return it either at the end of class OR the next day.  Remember your kind deed does not have to take place in school, but it would be nice if it did!

PSAT/SAT Day is October 16th!

Remember, Wednesday 10/16 is a regular school day...and you will take the PSAT if in 11th grade or the SAT if in 12th grade
(goes by credits earned.)

My understanding is the PSAT you $17 while the SAT costs $50-65.  The District is paying these fees for EVERYONE.  This is NOT a "blow off school day."  This is an opportunity to take these exams for FREE.

You are required to bring pencils & a calculator to the exam.  Very few pencils will be available and no calculators will be provided for the PSAT (they WILL give you a calculator to use if you are a 12th grader taking the SAT.)  If you do not bring a calculator to the PSAT, you will not have one for the math portion of the exam.

This is a GREAT opportunity to see where your weakness is - if you have any - & start to work toward a higher score for the SAT.

You will be released after the exam is over and "regular buses" will take you home.  Be on the lookout for a letter sent home by Mr. Callan & those annoying "robo calls" to remind you of what to do.  Pay attention to you 1st & 2nd period teachers Thursday as they will have your room assignments for the exam.

DUE: Tuesday, 10/15 Signed Thinkwave Printout

You will receive a Thinkwave print out in class on Thursday, 10/10.  You are required to return it to me on Tuesday, 10/15.  It must be signed by your parent/guardian.

There are no outstanding grades for US as of this posting.  If I had to enter report card grades tomorrow, the average in Thinkwave right now is what you have earned.  This is what was used for your progress reports.

This will count as a test grade: 0 or 100.  You have it on 10/15: 100.  It isn't turned in signed on 10/15, 0.

If you are absent Thursday you will have to print out your student summary grade report, with all grades & current average, on your own as these sheets will only be available Thursday in class.  You are not exempt & the deadline will not be extended.

Based on your average you fall into one of 2 categories:
#1:  Keep up the great work!  Your hard work, time & effort really shows & is paying off!

#2: You need a "Plan B," since your plan is not leading you to success.  You cannot pass without being in class, doing your HW, making up work when absent, or studying.  Fix it NOW before it is too late!

I hope you fall into Category #1!  If not, change your ways so you do!

I got an email from your sub...

For the first time ever, I received an email from a sub today.

Please self-reflect & be prepared to discuss whatever took place in your class today on Monday.  As you can imagine, if a sub went through the trouble of finding my email instead of just leaving a note for me to read Monday, it wasn't something I was pleased to read.

See you Monday...

Class Work tomorrow, 10/4

I have a personal day tomorrow so I will not be in.  However, I have left you work I had scheduled to give you in class.  Directions have been left that you are to work silently & independently, with all work turned in at the end of your class period.  I will be grading it, you will have a zero if it isn't done.  Work quickly & efficiently.  Work will not be accepted late.  Be sure your full name & class period is on all work.

See you Monday.

Thinkwave Entry

Thinkwave has been updated to reflect those of you who have competed the assignment of signing in.  If you have a 0, you have until tonight to sign it & have that changed by me tomorrow.  After tonight, the zero remains.

That's FOUR easy test grades this MP to boost your average:
1. Return signed Expectation (had almost 2 weeks)
2. Return completed Contact form (had almost 2 weeks)
3. Create a free account in Quizlet (had more than 2 weeks)
4. Sign into Thinkwave (you've had at least 10 school days to do this)

That should be 4 100s as test grades.  That should have made it very easy to get a great average for the 1st marking period.  I hope you took advantage of these gifts.

Thinkwave Clarifications

1.  If you have previously signed into to Thinkwave, it is not necessary to sign in again today.  As long as I see you have signed in & changed your password at some point prior to tonight, you've met the assignment criteria.

2.  Anything that is "blank" in Thinkwave is not counted in your average.  It is waiting for a grade or you were exempt from that assignment.  If you were not exempt, did not do it, or did not make it up by the deadline there is a 0, which does count in your average.

Check September postings for work due in October!

As a reminder, your work due in October was posted in September, so it will still be listed in September on the right side menu.  It will NOT show up under the October menu.  Please keep this in mind as you look for what's due if you don't start it in advance.  I always post early to give you plenty of time to get the work done at your own pace, but this means that you may need to click on the previous month to see the posting.
